Junior Championship
In the new normal of playing behind closed doors, we ventured to Scotstown to meet Drumhowan in the first quarter final of the Junior Championship. There was an eerie vibe within the grounds as the only sounds audible were the calls from the respective coaches for their warm up rituals. Both teams lined out with various changes and the Seans donning their white away strip. From the off our lads looked a little unnerved and the opposition had three points registered before we could draw breath. However the game settled and with that so did we. A Pat Kieran point in the eighth minute calmed the nerves and so we started to build. A tit for tat scoring exchange ensued with neither team getting settled into a rhythm. However following the water break Drumhowan took the lead by a point. From the kick out the ball moved swiftly back into the oppositions half where, it took a series of hand passes, until Adam O Driscoll struck a bullet like shot which rattled the rear stanchion with such force that I’m sure it would have been heard in the back seat of the balcony in Urbleshanny Chapel. The Seans had laid down their marker and from this moment forth they would not relinquish the lead. While the opposition did exert pressure and , at times, breach the defensive line the lads stood firm to grind out a well earned victory. Well done to all and a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries and knocks. A word of thanks to our Vice Chairperson, Brian McPhillips, who stepped into the realms of TV match commentary and was the one of the voices for the live streaming of the game. While Sky Sports are waiting on his response to their offer, I’m sure he will be available for our next championship encounter. A semi-final with Clones now beckons next weekend and, with the restrictions still likely to be in place, the eerie silence of the absent supporters will have moved to Tyholland on Saturday evening.
Match Day Sponsors
A big thanks to Liam McNelis and H&L Ironworks in New York City for being our match sponsor for the Championship Quarter Final. Liam, a native of Monaghan Town and a huge supporter of the GAA in New York, has young relations in the parish playing for the club. His brother Michael, a club member, presented the cheque to the Assistant Treasurer on behalf of Liam earlier in the week. Any business or individual who is interested or wishes to become a sponsor for any of our games, please contact Fergal Ward on 0864134687 for details.
Juveniles
The U17’s once again got on the wagon and secured a timely victory at home to Carrickmacross last Wednesday evening. It was great to bounce back and finish with a flourish in the last game of league. A shield semi final is on the horizon with the opposition to be confirmed.
Our U15’s headed for Oram on Thursday evening for their penultimate game in the league against Clan na Gael. Once again injuries etc reduced our numbers but it didn’t deter the starting eleven. They battled hard and took an early lead. However the dreaded water break broke their momentum and the home side slowly piled on the scores. A wholehearted effort couldn’t be disputed but it wasn’t enough and it was another defeat for the lads. The final game in the league is at home to Inniskeen on Thursday evening. Shield pairings will be decided after that. All is not lost yet.
The U13 team took on Aghabog in their final league game of the campaign. They once again took the fearless approach and laid down an early marker with quick scores. Aghabog battled tirelessly and pulled off some tremendous goal line saves. In the end the lads held on tight to the lead and ran out winners. A semi final against Drumhowan is now on the cards with a date, time and venue to be confirmed.
