Brian Sheridan RIP
The club would like to offer sincere condolences to the Sheridan Family of Gortmore, on the passing of Mr. Brian Sheridan. Brian was synonymous in the area as a family man, business man and dedicated club man. Having returned from England in the late 60’s, he and wife Delia, set up home in the parish. He established a building business and this would be his era of recognition as he constructed countless dwellings for many parishioners and further afield. His involvement with Club was completely invaluable in the early years of developing the facilities which remain to this day. He played a pivotal role, along with other committee members, in establishing one the biggest and most successful GAA Bingos in the province. In the early days of the Bingos infancy, when patrons and punts were scarce, he and the others stuck with the plan. In his own words the whole thing would be “lovely juvley”, and as it turned out, it was. For this and all his work, the Club is most grateful. To mark Brian’s contribution and association with the club, the Committee conducted a socially distanced guard of honor , on the morning of his funeral. To his wife Delia, children Denise, Helen, James, Joanne, Bernard and Dolores and all the extended family, the Sean Mac Diarmada Club wish to offer heartfelt sympathies on the passing of Brian.
Junior Championship Rd.4
Round 4 of the competition took us to Aghabog for our game against Rockcorry. Rock are in the process of big pitch developments and forfeited home advantage however this bore little of a burden to them on the day. They were strong and forceful on the ball , and while sometimes wasteful with scores, they held a four point deserved lead at the break. The low scoring trend would be maintained in the second half and while the Seans did improve they couldn’t convert chances to punish mistakes. Rock juggled with lead but managed to get it across the line by the minimum , one point. Our unbeaten run has come to stuttering halt, but with a break this week, we can hopefully regroup and prepare for phase two of the competition which becomes a winner takes all.
Juveniles
The U17’s Seans na Mullai travelled to Doohamlet for their championship fixture last week. This was once again a David and Goliath battle given recent results for the lads. However, as in the previous game, the score line did not reflect or measure the effort given by the boys. They hassled and harried the opposition for the duration while trying to grab the scores as the opportunities arose. A gallant performance and while the league table only records the final score the lads are progressing well and hopefully near to a win.
Our U15’s travelled to Doohamlet in their fourth game of their competition. It was the table toppers versus the those propping it up. With holidays and injuries playing their part with our boys it was to be a trip into the abyss or was it? For the players that took the field the they showed no signs of being overwhelmed by the opposition. They played with great guile and conviction against a very strong and powerful team. Although they never held the lead, the lads battled to the end and in doing so scored 6-12 which was just not enough. No victories on the board yet but this certainly has raised the confidence and hopefully they’ll get their rewards soon.
The U13 lads took on Drumhowan at home on Friday evening last. This was a rematch of the last years league final when the Seans fell short of a victory on that day. This was a cracking contest from the off with the lead changing many times in the first half. Some acrobatic goalkeeping from both sides kept the affair all square for most of the first period. However the second half would see the home team edge in front and hold off the onslaught of the visitors for the last ten minutes. Victory on the evening belonged to the Seans’ and deservedly so. However this competition is far from over and I would predict both teams will have a hand in the closing stages.
