Hughie McElvaney RIP
The Sean Mac Diarmada Club would like to pay a small tribute following the passing of one of its Honorary members. Hughie McElvaney, was a Seans man through and through. In a political career spanning fifty years, he had been a notable inclusion in the Council chambers, admirably representing his local area . However, Hughie, was also a massive advocate of our Club in this time. From sponsoring teams, the Elco Oils juvenile competitions, and numerous events, Hugh was never shy in supporting the Club during the good and bad times. He remained a firm follower of all teams and age groups and was a regular at games, regardless of age or gender. There wasn’t many of the players that he didn’t know or that didn't know him, and that was a special connection which never waned in all his years following the saffron and white. Hugh’s family is also as passionate about their roots and, they too, carry the flag for the club with another generation now wearing the colours. Hughies untimely passing has not only been a shock to his family but to our community, our club and beyond. People say he was one of a kind, and I doubt anyone will argue with that, but his absence from games and gatherings will not go unnoticed. The Club would like to extend condolences to Fionnuala, Emmet, Stephen and Conor and the wider family circle at this sad time.

Mens Junior Championship
There was somewhat of a bitter sweet feeling throughout the club this week. Our Championship Semi Final was overshadowed by the untimely passing of Honorary Member, Hughie McElvaney. However, the show must go on, and on it did, as we took the field in Scotstown on Sunday afternoon. This years encounters with Currin have been mixed and we presented with the mindset of all or nothing from the throw in. We dominated early on and pushed in front. Currin would have their purple patch and kicked two points to reduce the lead. But an overruled goal in the closing stages of the half, for us, was a catalyst for the opposition and two late scores from them left only the minimum of a point in it at the interval. After the restart our lads pushed it out to a three point lead, and with Currin receiving a black and red card within minutes of each other, we were set to close out a win. However, our complacency led to a superb goal strike by the opposition and suddenly we were chasing the game with ten minutes on the clock. But maturity took over, and panic was discarded, as we calmly worked a great goal and a couple of points in the closing minutes. Although we finished with some frantic defending, we had booked our first final spot since 2021. A huge achievement for the team who have suffered a number of setbacks during the season, and we will now play Emyvale on the 19th of October in a venue to be confirmed. We will savour the build up now and enjoy the preparations. Fairplay to the management and team for their efforts in this years championship. No doubt we may have had a little help from above on the day, as someones presence was missed. RIP Hughie.

Mothers & Others
Well, we are all packed and ready for the road. Our Mothers & Others are set to storm NYC this weekend for their international blitz. With all the essentials in the kit bag, pain killers, lippy and deodorant, they have expectations of big performances. Stay tuned to our social media as I would expect some colourful updates over the weekend. Good luck to the ladies and the Gaffer, Cormac Connolly, with their trip.

Sympathy
The Club would like to extend condolences to the family of the late Harry Hughes, Drumbear, Monaghan who passed away recently. Although a staunch Harps man, Harry had played for the Sean Mac Diarmada Club in their early years but later moved to the Harps where he settled. May he rest in peace.
