Official Opening of New Facilities

Minister Heather Humphreys officially opened our Muga Pitch and Walking Track last Thursday in front of members of the club and community, local politicians and Members of Monaghan County Council. As she stated in her address, it was a terrific amenity and a wonderful achievement in pulling ideas and resources together and making it a reality. Our two local schools showed the benefits of having the walking track and multi use games area by having fun playing various games during the ceremony. Chairperson of the Club, Brian McPhillips, showered praise on all those involved in any way in helping make the day possible. He stated that this work was the fruition of a development plan set in train some five years previous by the foregoing Chair, Sean McElvaney. Brian was adamant that the facility is at the heart of the community and would help many to engage in sports and pastimes whatever their age or ability. The Club would like to thank Minister Humphreys, the various government departments, Monaghan County Council and their staff and the local and national bodies that helped fund the projects. Both amenities are being well used and enjoyed by many sports groups and the community.

Junior League Round 1

All roads led to Drumhowan on Sunday for the opening game of the Junior Football League. Once again, the unpredictable weather would play a significant part in the games outcome. Drumhowan settled the quicker and slotted over their scores, however we stayed in touch and we were only a point behind at the break. A black card, early in the second period, gifted the home team a penalty and they duly converted. However, Drumhowan would only score one more point for the duration of the game. We, on the other hand, struggled to make the breakthrough to the net but we did picked off points and were only one in arrears coming into the closing stages. Nevertheless, as the final minutes ticked away the monsoon rains arrived. The ball was now bobbling around like it was on the top deck of the titanic and it was impossible to build a cohesive attack. That said, we won a free well out the field in the dying minutes and with it an opportunity to level the game. Once again, the well hit kick, hung up like a raffle ticket caught in the gale force wind, as everybody watched, it headed for the black spot on Drumhowans goal. But it would epitomise our luck on the day, as it bounced off the bar and out. The game was lost, and the rain came to an end, as we exited the stage on the refs final whistle. Not what we wanted on day one, and we cannot control all the eventualities, but we can assess the performance and plan for game two.

U14’s Boys League

Our U14’s entertained Carrickmacross on Saturday morning for their latest game of their league campaign. In a wholehearted effort from the team, they fought like tigers against a strong visiting side. A five-point deficit at the break did not deter them and they once again got stuck in to pull back the lead. It became score for score in the race for the finish. Carrick managed a couple goals late on , but the lads dug deep to reduce the lead to two points. However, it would be the clock that would beat their comeback of comebacks. Two points was the difference in the end and a win for Carrickmacross. The lads are making good strides in their game and a victory isn’t far away.
